A guide to a day out in Chichester

Though Bognor Regis is full of amazing attractions, there are many other places in the local area that are perfect for a day out. Only a fifteen minute drive away is the beautiful and historic city of Chichester, filled with great places to eat, visit, and relax. The city is scattered with parks and gardens, and Chichester’s very own cathedral stands tall above it all, a beautiful sight for those who visit.

Getting There

The 700 coastliner bus will take you straight into the heart of the city, or if you prefer a train ride then it’s roughly 20 minutes, with an occasional change at Barnham station. Many of the great attractions in Chichester are only a short walk from the train station, and the city centre is always nearby.

There are plenty of wonderful attractions throughout the city, whether you’re looking to relax surrounded by nature or have fun with the family.

Here are some of our favourite places to spend a day out in Chichester.

Priory Park – perfect for a picnic

Located on the north-east corner of the walled city, Priory Park is a great place to wind down with the family. There’s a play area for the kids and plenty of space to spread out a picnic blanket, or stop off at Fenwicks Cafe for hot or cold refreshments. It’s the perfect place to spend a sunny afternoon.

Chichester Cathedral

This timeless landmark of Chichester can be found right by the city centre, a beautiful place to see and explore. It’s free entry to all and open every day of the week, so easy to wander in and have a look around at the fascinating building. You can stop for lunch at the Cloisters Cafe and try some of their delicious food – from afternoon tea to a traditional Sunday roast – pop into the gift shop for a souvenir, or simply take a walk around the stunning cathedral grounds.

The Novium

Built over the remains of a Roman bathhouse, The Novium museum is the place to go to learn more about the rich history of Chichester. The museum is situated just across from the cathedral, and it’s free admission, so visiting is fun and easy. The fascinating exhibits and artefacts are great for all ages, and there are plenty of activities for the little ones! With events going on all year round, The Novium always has something different to offer.

Pallant House Gallery

Only a short walk away from the train station, Pallant House Gallery is the perfect attraction for art lovers, or anyone looking for a relaxing day out. Admission is free for kids under 16, so take your family and explore the many different exhibitions that Pallant House has to offer. You could stop for a bite in the cafe, or dine in style in the exclusive restaurant, there’s food for any mood.

Bishop’s Palace Gardens

Just outside the city centre are the stunning Bishop’s Palace Gardens, a peaceful and relaxing place to wind down after a busy day. A hidden treasure of Chichester, the gardens are open from 8am until dusk and offer a wildlife friendly area, footpaths for those who want to stroll through the scenery, and plenty of seating from which you can observe the simple beauty of gardens. Dating back to the twelfth century, the gardens are but another example of Chichester’s incredible history and allow visitors to relax while learning more about the remarkable city.

As well as these many great attractions there is loads more to explore in the city of Chichester. If you’re feeling active try a walk along the city walls, one of the many historic landmarks of the city.

You can also finish your day at one of the many pubs or restaurants throughout the city centre, where there is always delicious food and often great entertainment. The perfect end to a great day out!
