Walking this May Half Term is a great way to slow down and soak up the beauty of West Sussex. It’s not just good for your body – helping to lower blood pressure, build strength and improve balance – it’s also brilliant for your wellbeing. Whether you’re clearing your head, spending time with family, or simply exploring somewhere new, a good walk does wonders. From scenic stomps and heritage trails to beachside strolls, there’s a route for every kind of day (just don’t forget a raincoat – it is the UK, after all!).
Here are some of our favourite local routes, in Bognor Regis and beyond:
Step into the past with six heritage trail maps that guide you through Bognor Regis’ fascinating history. Discover how our seaside town has evolved, and enjoy a new perspective on streets you may know well.
A haven for birdwatchers and nature lovers, Pagham Harbour offers a selection of trails across diverse terrain. Their handy map highlights which paths are wheelchair accessible, so you can plan ahead for a peaceful walk through this beautiful natural reserve.
Just inland, Chichester’s ancient city walls provide a circular route with views of the cathedral, charming gardens and hidden corners of the city. A gentle, historically rich stroll in a stunning setting.
Right in the heart of Bognor Regis, Hotham Park is a green gem. Its winding paths, playful squirrels and play area make it ideal for families. Every visit can feel different, and there’s plenty of space to wander at your own pace.
Come spring, Slindon Woods bursts into life with carpets of bluebells. A perfect spot for dogs, families, or solo walkers looking to get lost in nature (without actually getting lost).
If you love a view, this walk delivers! On a clear day, you might even glimpse the Isle of Wight. It includes a steady incline, so may not be suitable for everyone – but it’s well worth the effort.
A coastal classic. On a sunny day you can spot Selsey to the west and Brighton to the east. Break it into sections or tackle the whole route – either way, there are plenty of chances to stop for an ice cream or a chippy tea along the way.
Flat, accessible and full of seaside charm, this is a brilliant option for young children or those needing a more relaxed route. With car parks nearby and plenty of benches to pause and take in the view, it’s a family favourite.
Circle Swanbourne Lake or head up to Hiorne Tower for sweeping views of the countryside. This is a lovely all-seasons walk, with free parking on Mill Road (get there early during busy times) and a picturesque route that shows off Arundel’s natural beauty.
Wherever your feet take you this month, walking is a wonderful way to connect – with nature, with local history, and with each other. From hidden woodlands to seafront strolls, there’s something special about exploring what’s on your doorstep. So grab your walking shoes, pop the kettle on for a post-walk cuppa, and make the most of National Walking Month right here in and around Bognor Regis.
