PROGRESS STATUS: ONGOING (delivery by December 2025)

The Alexandra Theatre, located within The Regis Centre, opened in 1980, operating as a small-scale, 357 seat community theatre. The theatre has been a hub for entertainment, hosting a variety of shows from comedy to drama and pantomime. However, it needed revitalization to deliver a fit for purpose, state of the art venue for audiences, the community and cultural partners to enjoy.

Following a successful bid to the Levelling Up Fund, and a £3m investment from Arun District Council, plans are now underway to rejuvenate the theatre, including:

  • Full technical & interior refurbishment of the main auditorium;
  • Additional seating capacity, increasing to 386 seats
  • 2700sqm of arts/cultural floorspace
  • Fully accessible double height foyer with public gallery & display space
  • Improved catering and café bar facilities with external seating on the Place St Maur during the summer months
  • Five new airy studios – two of which will be fully performance equipped and with flexible seating & stage, allowing up to three simultaneous performances to run across the building at once
  • Ability to link all five new studios to the main auditorium with audio / visual – allowing access for larger audiences to keynote performances;
  • A striking contemporary façade
  • A new welcoming entrance directly onto the Place Saint Maur, to enliven and interact with the surrounding area
  • Improved energy efficient design and sustainability initiatives.
